Fashion Friday: Fourth of July!

I always hate when the Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week….especially on a Wednesday.  I plan to start celebrating our country’s independence this weekend and I can’t wait to break out my stars and stripes!

Happy Friday and Happy Fourth of July!

Designer Crush: Greg Natale

Every now and then I come across an architect or designer that really speaks to me.  When I saw the work of the Aussie mega-talent, Greg Natale, I felt just that! I love how he has the unique ability to use a lot of dark colors while keeping his spaces feeling light and airy.  He also effortlessly combines old and new in order to keep his designs fresh and interesting.

I only wish I saw this nursery before I designed my own! I’m obsessed…

Who is your favorite architect or designer? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Elephant Motif

I know very little about elephants, but I do like them and it turns out that elephant decor in your home is considered good luck! They are seen as symbols of wisdom and dignity because of their intelligence and incredibly long life span. Having an elephant at the door of your house is supposed to keep out negative energy.  I’ve read that the elephant trunk should be aimed up in order to be considered lucky, however, I like the way they look both up and down.

What do you think of elephant decor? Do you believe it may bring luck?

Bar Carts

The bar cart is one of those pieces of furniture that is both so stylish and also functional and useful.  They became popular in the 1940′s after prohibition ended so people could wheel out alcoholic beverages to all of their guests.  I love the way they look when fully stocked with bar accessories or when they are just used to house books and flowers.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Los Angeles Home

One of my guilty pleasures is occasionally tuning into TMZ…although it is generally complete trash, last week they actually reported something pretty interesting.  It turns out Gwyneth Paltrow and her adorable husband Chris Martin purchased a spectacular estate in the Mandeville Canyon area of Los Angeles known as The House of Windsor.  I am completely blown away by all of the lovely details in this home concept home, which was designed by Windsor Smith and decorated by designers from Veranda Magazine.  Click here for a 360° tour of each and every inch of this property!

My favorite part of this home is the lovely silver leaf footed bathtub.  The whole dressing room/bathroom area is just stunning.  Which room do you like best?

Sitting Pretty: The Perfect Window Seat

When I was growing up, I lived in a house with a lot of built-ins.  My favorite built-in is a window seat. These cozy little sun-lit nooks are the perfect place to relax with a book, chat with friends or just relax.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a built-in window seat, but I think these window nooks are just as cozy!

Modern Art

Yesterday, I took a spin through the Metropolitan Museum of Art…I assumed I would be in and out, but ended up staying almost all day.  Regardless of the museum, my favorite exhibits are always Asian Art, European Paintings (especially Spanish) and Modern & Contemporary Art.  I typically skip American, Egyptian, Greek, and African exhibits although yesterday I did browsed through and really enjoyed every minute of it – particularly the Egyptian tombs.  Anyway, the Modern & Contemporary Art collection at the Met is fantastic.  I could have spent my entire day just taking in this exhibit alone!

I especially loved the Bridget Riley Op Art collection…

It kind of reminded me of Villa alle Scalette

I literally couldn’t take my eye off the work by Roy Lichtenstein

 style theories blog

Could you even image having a Lichtenstein-esque painting of a living room in your living room? I’m obsessed.

I have always admired the work of Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollack, but James Rosenquist is a new favorite of mine. I died when I saw this painting

Modern art certainly holds a special place in my heart.  I like it because it looks so spectacular inside just about any room in any home. A relatively simple concept can pack a major punch.  Everytime I visit a museum, I face the same dilemma… I want to buy every single peice of artwork that I can get my hands on.

Modern Art definitely isn’t for everyone. How do you feel about it?
